This paper makes three principal contributions. First, we propose a new estimator for the unobservable variable models with endogenous causes. We show that under factor analysis type of assumptions, Robinson and Ferrara (1977)'s procedure is not fully efficient, and a more efficient procedure can be obtained by merging Robinson and Ferrara' procedure with that in Joreskog and Goldberger (1975) procedure. The asymptotic properties of the new estimator are compared with these two estimators and results indicate that, with our mixture approach, significant efficiency gains can be achieved. Second, we model the Quality of life (QOL) as an unobservable or latent link variable between observable causes and observable effects, which mitigates problem of bias,... |

A matrix of direct, cross and income demand elasticities at farm level for 14 fresh fruits was estimated using the mixed estimation technique. Prior estimates were derived from past research and application of the symmetry relation, cross induction and subjective judgment. There were no statistically significant conflicts between the sample and prior information. Even though estimation efficiency increased with the mixed technique, only a limited number of cross elasticities could be estimated. |

This paper makes a contribution to the application of nonlinear simultaneous equations estimation and nonparametric Bootstrapping techniques. The nonlinear demand model estimation work in this paper is in the context of the newly developed Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System (QUAIDS) model, and provides substantive results in terms of both model estimation technique and empirical economic findings. For the first time, bootstrapping is used in this highly nonlinear modeling environment to estimate variability in demand model parameter estimates and associated demand elasticities. The application relates to Japanese consumer behavior relative to Wagyu Beef, Imported Beef, Pork, Chicken, and Fish demand, and the empirical results are highly relevant to U.S.... |

This paper attempts to provide a comprehensive analysis of interrelationships among the determinants of the Quality of Life (QOL). We show that various measures of well-being are highly sensitive to domains of QOL that are considered in the construction of comparative indices, and how measurable inputs into the well-being indicators are aggregated and weighted to arrive at composite measures of QOL. We present a picture of conditions among the 43 countries of the world with respect to such interrelated domains of QOL as the relationship with family and friends, emotional well-being, health, work and productivity, material well-being, feeling part of one's community, personal safety, and the quality of environment. On the basis of Borda Rule and the... |

This study revisits the consistent aggregation (over households) property of almost ideal demand system (AIDS) models and presents a method to explicitly account for expenditure aggregation bias when estimating the aggregate AIDS model with time-series data. Ignoring aggregation bias can lead to biased and inconsistent parameter estimates and can cause aggregate demand functions to be inconsistent with the demand functions at the individual household level. Recognizing the general limited information contained in aggregate time-series data for explicitly modeling aggregation bias, we present a new method of constructing an aggregation bias term that is derived from the proportions of household in different income groups. This information is generally... |

An adaptive estimator is proposed to optimally estimate unknown truncation points of the error support space for the general linear model. The adaptive estimator is specified analytically to minimize a risk function based on the squared error loss measure. It is then empirically applied to a generalized maximum entropy estimator of the linear model using bootstrapping, allowing the information set of the model itself to determine the truncation points. Monte Carlo simulations are used to demonstrate performance of the adaptive entropy estimator relative to maximum entropy estimation coupled with alternative truncation rules and to ordinary least squares estimation. A food demand application is included to demonstrate practical implementation of the... |

An analytical framework to assess the effects of changing income and socio-demographic distributions on aggregate food demand functions in transitional economies is presented. Ignoring such distributional effects can lead to biased estimates of aggregate demand elasticities. The proposed method is applied to Chinese urban household expenditure survey data. The results indicate that the drastic distributional changes that have occurred in China have had notable effects on estimated demand elasticities for both food and non-food commodity groups. |

The bargaining process and its role in price discovery within the Pacific Northwest asparagus industry is analyzed using a general empirical bargaining model. Growers' and processors' inverse supply and demand functions define boundaries for the negotiated prices. OLS and Heckman's two-stage estimation procedures are used to estimate a stochastic bargaining model of price determination. The results indicate that basic supply and demand forces exert substantial influences on the bargaining process. In particular, expected levels of supply play a paramount role in the level of prices offered, while past prices also influence current offers. The general framework of analysis used in relation to asparagus can be generalized to other commodities where... |

An econometric model was specified to represent the U.S. lettuce industry. Cursory examination of the industry structure suggests that imperfect competition may prevail in the lettuce market. Therefore, relations were specified that allowed for the possibility of imperfectly competitive behavior to affect market equilibrium outcomes. Specifically, a supply price equation was specified to account for the influence of market power of large growers, particularly during seasons of geographically concentrated production. Results do not contradict the hypothesis that imperfect competition exists in the lettuce market. |

There has been a recent trend towards purchasing land for farmland preservation, wildlife refuges, other conservation, and cultural and historical preservation. There is a great deal of unexplained variation in the dollars paid per acre for these properties. The theoretical basis for this analysis is an option value model with stochastic returns to development. The data used in our analysis is sales transactions data for natural resource conservation and farmland preservation purposes from throughout the United States. We find that land, when it would be best used for development, but is not developed, has a significantly higher price. |

We assess consumer choice of eco-labeled, organic, and regular apples, and identify sociodemographic characteristics affecting the choice among those three alternatives. Eco-labeled apples are less desirable than organic when food safety, the environment, and children's needs are considered. Characteristics that may be expected to positively affect the decision to buy eco-labeled apples relative to regular apples actually have the opposite effect with the inclusion of the organic alternative. When considering all three choices, the eco-labeled product is found to be an intermediate choice among consumers. |

An Inverse Almost Ideal Demand System is utilized to determine the effectiveness of Market Promotion Program (MPP) and Target Export Assistance (TEA) advertising and promotion expenditures in the Japanese market for meat. Using annual data, it is found that beef advertising and promotion has had a positive and significant effect on the demand for beef. There is insufficient evidence to conclude that pork and poultry advertising and promotion increased the demand for either commodity. |
